Ahead of the monthly expiry, the benchmark indices had bled more than 1.5% each in the first half of the session. But the sudden sharp drop induced buying. Thus, recovering from the losses, at close, the Sensex was down 135 points(0.26%) at 52,444, and the Nifty was down 37 points(0.24%) at 15,709.
Among the sectors, Nifty metals(1.22%) and IT(0.21%) were the only two gainers while FMCG ended flat and PSU banks(-1.88%) suffered the most losses.
In CNX500, CENTURYTEX(16.7%) and JKPAPER(13.4%) were the top gainers whereas INTELLECT(-10.6%) and TATACOFFEE(-8.6%) slipped into deep red territory.
In Nifty50, BHARTIARTL(5%) and TATASTEEL(2.8%) gained the most whereas, KOTAKBANK(-2.6%) and DRREDDY(-2.5%) were the top losers.
In the volume chart, ELGIEQUIP(25.6x) and CENTURYTEX(25x) gained momentum. The two stocks also topped the deliverable changes list with 21.5x and 10.1x spikes, accompanied by ATUL(15.2x).
FIIs were the net sellers again of Rs.2275cr worth of shares whereas DIIs bought a net of Rs.921cr.
